Screen Test: Audience Feedback

In this blogpost, we've created a small screen draft that will be used to showcase to audiences and allowing us to gain feedback to help improve our music video.

Screen Test

The purpose of this screen test was to help us evaluate how effectively our music video communicates its message and as well as to identify any areas for improvement. This is an important part of the production process as it allows us to gain direct feedback from our target audience and understand how they interpret our work. To collect responses effectively we created a feedback survey using paper based questionnaire.

Here are the questions we asked:

1. What did you think the music video's message about?

2. What emotions did you feel when watching this music video?

3. What do you think made the music video boring?

4. Would you watch this again or share this to a friend? ( Why / Why not? )

5. What would you recommend we add to this music video?

We chose these questions to make sure the main elements of our music video such as the story emotion engagement and the overall impact were clearly understood by the audience. The questions allow viewers to freely share their opinions which helped us identify both the strength of the video and areas that need improvement.

Below is the draft version of the music video that we use for the screen test.

These were the responses we received from three participants who gave us feedback. To make a fair we selected three upper secondary students of mixed genders from different great levels.

Audience Feedback Summary

Aimee 10B

Aimee understood the music videos messages being about a couple in a toxic relationship that eventually caused problems. Emotionally she felt the video was mostly cute at first but later became sad due to the specific scenes showing the emotional shift was really effective. She did not find a video boring and described it as enjoyable to watch. While she would consider watching or sharing the video in the future, because to her it felt incomplete as it was still draft. As for improvement she recommended flashbacks to show more of the couples backstory and to clarify what happens in the end of the relationship.

Marley 11B

Marley interpreted the music video as portraying a toxic relationship that the couple is unable to fix, which leads to the breakup. He felt both happy and sad while watching as the video showed a contrast between the positive and negative moments of the relationship. He didn't find the video boring and found the storyline engaging. However, he mentioned that he would not rewatch it yet or share the video due to its short length, although he thinks that the final outcome will be a success. To improve he suggest including more scenes showing the bad side of the relationship and wanted to see more of the girls perspective.

Charlene 12B

Charlene understood the message as showing the transformation of a relationship from a honeymoon phase into something tense and destructive. She described the emotions as happy, sad, and bittersweet, especially after seeing all the flashback in the beginning and later to the conflicts. She suggested that the running scene felt slightly too aggressive and it should be tone down. She also mentioned how she would watch this video and she believes that it will have a strong connection because the visuals amplified the song effectively. Overall she felt the draft was ready very good and only needed polishing.

 Conclusion

Overall, the audience feedback was very positive and showed that the message of the music video was clearly understood. Our respondent interpreted the story as a romantic relationship that slowly becomes toxic, especially noticing the contrast between the happy beginning and later conflict. Viewers felt in emotions such as happiness, sadness bittersweet nostalgia showing that the video successfully connected with them emotionally. They also found the video engaging and not boring and most said they would be willing to rewatch or share it even though they felt the draft was unfinished.

However, the feedback also highlighted areas that could be improved. The narrative could be developed further by adding more contacts or flashbacks to better show the relationships progression. Showing both characters perspective especially the girls point of view can make the story more balance and realistic. Some viewers felt the pace and length could be improved and one scene felt too aggressive which could be toned down. Finally polishing technical elements like the editing and shot choice would help make the final music video feel more complete and professional.

Reflection: Our biggest problem was being confused about the project which led to everything being done last minute. We were not fully prepared with the draft so we had to quickly create a short clip to show for feedback and rush to print the paper feedback forms which meant asking several teachers for help. To manage this we worked cooperatively by splitting task. I focused on creating the screen test draft while my teammates helped to find participants and handled the printing. Fortunately the editing process was simple and did not require much time. Luckily teachers were kind enough to help print our forms out with the school facilities knowing that teachers aren't allowed to do so. In the future we need to understand the task more clearly and from now on we should start preparing earlier to avoid misunderstandings and unnecessary stress.
